Robotaxi Revolution: Uber and Nuro Take Next Step towards Autonomous Future

As the autonomous vehicle (AV) industry continues to evolve at breakneck speed, two of its most prominent players - Uber and Nuro - have taken a significant step forward by beginning testing of their premium robotaxi service in San Francisco. The latest phase of testing sees select Uber employees being able to request rides through the Uber app in modified Lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with Nuro’s autonomous vehicle system.

This development marks a major milestone for the partnership, which was announced in July 2025 and saw Uber invest $300 million in Lucid and commit to purchasing at least 20,000 of the EV maker’s new Gravity SUVs over the next six years. The investment is significant not only because of its financial value but also because it highlights the confidence both companies have in the potential of their autonomous vehicle technology.

The modified Lucid Gravity robotaxis, which were revealed in January, are equipped with a range of sensors and cameras that enable them to perceive and interact with their environment. These include high-resolution cameras, solid-state lidar sensors, and radars, all powered by Nvidia’s Drive AGX Thor computer. This impressive array of technology allows the vehicles to operate autonomously while also ensuring safety through the presence of a human safety operator behind the wheel.

The significance of this testing phase cannot be overstated. While it may not yet be a public launch, it marks an important step towards making autonomous ride-hailing a reality for consumers. The challenges involved in developing such technology are numerous and complex, but the potential rewards are substantial. With the ability to operate without human intervention, autonomous vehicles have the potential to transform urban mobility, reducing congestion, emissions, and accidents while also increasing safety.

In addition to its investment in Lucid, Uber has also invested an undisclosed “multi-hundred-million dollar” amount into Nuro, further highlighting the importance of this partnership. The plan is for Uber to own and operate the premium robotaxi service, likely with the help of a third party, which would see production of these modified vehicles begin in late 2026.

As Nuro continues to test its autonomous technology on public roads, it has already made significant progress since completing closed-course testing and starting its first public road testing of the Lucid Gravity SUVs late last year. With an engineering fleet of 100 Lucid Gravity SUVs outfitted with its self-driving system, Nuro is able to gather real-world data and test autonomous driving across multiple U.S. cities and states.

The employee test rides are a critical part of this process, allowing the team to evaluate how the autonomy stack, vehicle, and rider experience work together and function in a live operating environment. This phase also enables the testing of complex operations such as rider pickups and drop-offs, which is notoriously tricky in autonomous ride-hailing. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to watch how these early tests translate into a wider roll-out of autonomous vehicle technology.
